2021 Volvo V90 Cross Country review: Who needs an SUV?

How great does this issue search with a roof box?

The 2021 Volvo V90 Cross Nation is an achingly very wagon, with a complex all-wheel-drive system, a lot of ground clearance and cargo area for times. It also gives decent gas economy and just one of the finest interiors in the luxurious area. Why obtain another SUV when you could have this instead?

  • Stunning inside
  • Handsome exterior
  • Extremely comfortable

Do not Like

  • Growing older infotainment
  • Uninteresting powertrain

The V90 Cross Nation is powered by the T6 version of Volvo’s ubiquitous four-cylinder engine, bolted to an eight-speed automated transmission. In this case, the 2.-liter I4 has equally a supercharger and a turbocharger, and provides a healthful 316 horsepower and 295 pound-ft of torque. It is not the sweetest-sounding or smoothest engine all-around, but it will work well and returns an EPA-believed 20 miles per gallon in the city, 30 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg mixed — quantities that I found simple to obtain, even with the added aerodynamic drag of a roof box.

Acceleration in the Cross Nation is brisk, thanks to the lower-stop torque afforded by the twin-billed engine, even though it tends to operate out of steam at higher revs. As with most Volvos, the engine lacks drama for improved or worse, built to just get you where you want to go. The eight-speed automated transmission hardly ever huts for gears and shifts at ideal locations, so it also mainly fades into the background.

The V90 Cross Nation is a luxurious car or truck at its main and the way it drives reflects that. The optional ($one, two hundred) 4-C adaptive air suspension is superb, isolating travellers from all but the gnarliest highway imperfections, but not so a lot that the V90 feels disconnected from the highway. The steering is direct but not terribly communicative, and the brakes are superb, exhibiting no discernible fade even on long, speedy descents down mountain roadways. All round, the V90 Cross Nation isn’t really what I’d get in touch with remarkable to drive, but it doesn’t want to be. It is damn cozy and tremendous simple to live with — just like any great luxurious car or truck should really be.

The V90 is a little outdated, but it however gives initial-price basic safety tech. Volvo’s Town Safety suite of devices is conventional on every V90 Cross Nation, which features automated emergency braking, lane-preserve assist, adaptive cruise regulate, a 360-degree camera and more. These, mixed with Volvo’s potent chassis structure, are adequate to net the brand 9 IIHS basic safety awards.

The V90’s inside is cozy and beautifully built.

Volvo undoubtedly understands how to make a wonderful inside, and the V90 Cross Country’s cabin is stellar. Volvo’s seats have traditionally been some of the finest in the business enterprise, featuring superb convenience even just after hours on the highway, and that is totally legitimate with the V90. These chairs are particularly supportive and adjustable, and clad in gentle perforated leather. The seats in my tester are heated and cooled and supply massage operation, as well. In short, they’re ace.

The relaxation of the inside is thoughtfully laid out, with all controls within simple arrive at and uncomplicated to use. Volvo also warrants reward factors in this article for the exclusive end on the various knobs and wheels, which is not only interesting to search at, but feels wonderful less than your fingers. The relaxation of the inside proceeds alongside that line, with wonderful interest to element and little bits of flair, building it truly feel like a thing definitely unique in contrast to the often staid cabins of German luxurious automakers.

Volvo’s Sensus infotainment tech is acceptable, and interesting, but this system that seemed so forward-wondering just a couple of decades in the past now feels relatively dated. The nine-inch touchscreen gives more quickly reaction periods than ahead of and equally Apple CarPlay and Android Vehicle are conventional, but I are not able to wait around for Volvo to combine its new Android Automotive tech into its complete lineup. This is the system you are going to locate in the new Polestar 2, and it is really wonderful.

This Sensus system is beginning to display its age.

A single of the V90’s highlights is the Bowers & Wilkins premium stereo system. Normally, I’m reasonably indifferent to B&W devices, but in this article, you get the choice to digitally alter the listening surroundings. It may well appear like a gimmick, but the Gothenburg Concert Corridor setting is genuinely wonderful and provides a great deal to the listening practical experience. For audiophiles like me, this is a large get.

Getting a luxurious car or truck, the V90 Cross Nation isn’t really affordable. But in contrast to a great deal of in the same way equipped luxurious SUVs — including Volvo’s personal XC90 — it is really a little fewer high priced. The V90 Cross Nation commences at $56,690 including $one,095 for place, and my well-equipped examination automobile has a sticker cost of $sixty seven,740. Presented the way the Cross Nation seems to be, feels and drives, that cost is reasonable.

This or an SUV? Surely this.

This Volvo’s closest competition are the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain, and while the V90 retains its personal, the Germans out-carry out it in a couple of key techniques. The V90 has a maximum cargo ability of fifty three.nine cubic ft, while the Audi A6 Allroad and Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain supply about sixty four. The Volvo is also down on electricity in contrast to the two Germans, which use gentle-hybrid setups the Audi gives 335 hp and 369 lb-ft, while the Mercedes delivers 362 hp and 369 lb-ft. Audi and Mercedes supply a lot improved cabin tech, too.

Even so, the Volvo is just as wonderful to drive, every bit as cozy and arguably improved to search at. These competition may well be newer, but I’d however have the V90 more than equally. This wagon gives anything you’d check with from a two-row SUV, help you save for an elevated driving situation and probably some towing capability (the Cross Nation can however pull 3,five hundred lbs, however). It is cozy, roomy, handsome and simple to live with. SUV drivers really don’t know what they’re lacking.
